Course Descriptions

Self-Advocacy
Students learn vital skills necessary to appropriately advocate for themselves within the college environment. This course illustrates individual student rights and responsibilities and how to improve identifying and communicating their needs with professors/student support staff/roommates; without the assistance of their parents.  Students will design an individualized student success plan, and gain greater confidence through role-playing and participation in self-awareness exercises.

Team-Building and Collaboration
Students build upon their problem-solving and group-work skills through a variety of entertaining and creative activities designed to challenge students and assist them in working together to solve increasingly complex tasks.  Activities include a ropes course, an ice-cube challenge, the construction of a free-standing shelter made from newspaper.

Study Skills
Students are introduced to a variety of study techniques to help better correlate their own individual learning styles with a specific curricular content area.  Strategies used include note-taking techniques, color-coding methods, mnemonic devices, and auditory/visual/kinesthetic/tactile approaches.  Time management and planning strategies will be introduced as essential tools to create and implement their own ideal study environments.

College Life
Students examine key differences of college life compared to their experiences in high school. This opportunity offers a forum with current college students who also have learning and/or behavioral disabilities.   Together, students read a syllabus, discuss selecting a major, and become more familiar with a college library and available health and academic services.

Mathematics
Two levels of skill-building and remediation courses are offered in the area of mathematics; based upon the student’s current performance capabilities. 

Both courses will utilize multi-sensory methods and interactive exercises to reinforce important key concepts: 

-fractions
-equations
-graphing
-exponents
-order of operations
-factoring 

Each area covered in these courses will strengthen skills necessary for success in college-level mathematics and science.

Language Arts
Two levels skill-building and remediation courses are offered in the area of language arts; based upon the student’s current performance capabilities

Both courses will utilize multi-sensory methods and engaging activities to reinforce important skills:

-grammar
-reading motivations
-comprehension
-vocabulary development
-reading fluency
-reading speed

Students also work on core writing skills.  Tools will introduce better organization concepts, proofreading/editing strategies, revision techniques and assistive technology aides.  Each area covered in these courses help prepare students for the increased demands of reading and writing in college.
